There was a time when I would buy a product simply because it looked beautiful on the shelf. If the packaging was pretty, the scent was good, and everyone online loved it… I was sold.
But once I started learning more about ingredients, hormones, and what we’re actually putting on our bodies every single day, I started paying attention in a completely different way.
And honestly? It changed everything for me.
This doesn’t come from fear, perfection, or trying to live a “perfectly clean” life. It simply comes from becoming more intentional. I started realizing that luxury should never come at the cost of our health ....and that the products we use daily should support us, not work against us.
So today I wanted to share a few ingredients I personally try to avoid when shopping for beauty and body products, and why they matter to me.
1. Artificial Fragrance (Parfum)
This was probably the biggest eye opener for me.
The word “fragrance” on an ingredient label can actually represent dozens sometimes even hundreds of undisclosed chemicals hidden under one single term.
For me personally, this was where I started questioning everything:
candles
perfumes
lotions
lip products
laundry products
even products marketed as “clean”
Now, that doesn’t mean every scented product is automatically bad. But I do think consumers deserve more transparency about what they’re using daily.
One of the biggest goals behind Lottie Luxe is creating products that still feel feminine, elevated, luxurious, and beautiful — without compromising ingredient standards.
2. Parabens
Parabens are preservatives commonly used in beauty and skincare products to extend shelf life.
Over the years, they’ve become one of the most talked-about ingredients in the wellness space because of concerns surrounding hormone disruption.
Once I learned how many products contained parabens — especially products used every single day — I started slowly swapping them out where I could.
Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
Just intentionally.
And honestly, that’s how I think sustainable wellness should feel.
3. Phthalates
Phthalates are often linked to synthetic fragrance and are used to help scents last longer.
The tricky part is that you won’t always see the word “phthalates” directly listed on a label, which is another reason I became more aware of vague ingredient lists.
As I started my own non-toxic journey, I realized that small changes done consistently can really add up over time.
4. Petroleum & Mineral Oil
This one surprises people sometimes because these ingredients are extremely common in lip products, lotions, and glosses.
Personally, I started gravitating toward products with more nourishing oils and skin-supportive ingredients instead — things that felt more intentional and aligned with the kind of products I wanted to use daily.
Especially for lip products, I love formulas that feel hydrating, glossy, luxurious, and comforting while still prioritizing cleaner ingredients.
5. Artificial Dyes
Artificial dyes are everywhere — especially in beauty products marketed to women.
And while they definitely make products look fun and aesthetic, I personally started paying closer attention to whether they were truly necessary.
One thing I’ve learned through this journey is that wellness and luxury can absolutely coexist. Products can still feel chic, feminine, elevated, and exciting without relying on unnecessary ingredients.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, this journey isn’t about perfection.
It’s about awareness.
It’s about intention.
It’s about creating a lifestyle that feels both beautiful and supportive.
I still believe beauty should feel fun. I still love feminine packaging, luxurious textures, soft scents, and products that make everyday routines feel special. That part will never change for me.
But now, I also care deeply about what’s inside the products I’m bringing into my home and using every day.
And honestly? That mindset is what inspired Lottie Luxe in the first place.
Luxury should feel beautiful.
But it should feel good, too. ✨
